History of Win Our World Urban Outreach Ministry
Summer of 2001
A long weekend mission trip to Columbia, SC laid the groundwork for a relationship with St. Andrew's Lutheran Church (SALC) of Columbia. St. John's Lutheran Church (SJLC) youth worked with the youth at SALC on Vacation Bible Study activities. A strong bond was formed that led to future summers of mission work as well as shared TAG and TEC activities.
Summer of 2002
The youth of St. John's Lutheran Church made a life changing mission trip to Wilmington, NC. The trip was organized by Nancy Friedrich and Pastor Amy Figg; Nancy doing the logistical mission stuff, freeing up Pastor Amy to provide relationship and spiritual leadership. There were eight youth from SJLC joined by eight youth from SALC. Three other faithful adults from SJLC also participated. It was a week filled with hot, back-breaking, messy, relationship-building mission work with amazingly Spirit-filled beachside worship at sunset.
Summer of 2003
Wanting to save money for The Atlanta Gathering (TAG) being held later that same summer, the decision was made to have an in-town mission trip. Inviting friends from SALC in Columbia, SC to Knoxville, a week's worth of mission activities, evening fun, and worship had been organized. There were twenty-four SJLC youth that participated that summer, opening the eyes of the leadership to the great need for mission work in the SJLC neighborhood.
